Give a listen to Josh Kaufman's 'Voice'-winning voice

I couldn't say it better than IBJ's Eight@8, so I repeat here, with links. Also, while "The Voice" tour isn't (yet) scheduled for Indianapolis, it is set for Chicago July 16.

And sometimes life just gets it right.

A few months ago, Josh Kaufman was a 38-year-old SAT test tutor and family man who gigged around Indianapolis as a blue-eyed soul singer, including a lunchtime slot at the Circle's Potbelly. Today, he is the newly crowned winner of NBC's "The Voice," with a record contract and a new car (brought to you by Kia!). Critics agreed: Kaufman was the class of the Season 6 class.

If you can only watch one performance, here's his scorching cover of Adele's "Set Fire to the Rain" from the finals. (His "Signed, Sealed, Delivered I'm Yours" is solid as well.) The bespectacled and bookish Kaufman couldn't be more humble and modest. (Here's his exit interview.)

Is he the next Steve Winwood or this year's Taylor Hicks? Who cares? He's ours, and he's a winner.

Just as long as he does not go country on us.

Well, if Kaufman doesn't mind making a few million a year and being one of the best live performers around then maybe he will be lucky enough to be the next Taylor Hicks. I doubt it because he doesn't have nearly as strong a voice or performing skills.

A big Congratulations to Josh and his family. He is a true winner all the way. I never had any doubt that he would win!!!
      • Cody what?
Ok...not gonna bash Taylor Hicks (well then again, maybe I will a little, but I don't dislike him...I'm not Simon), but Lou brought him up for a reason...of all of the winners of these mostly silly, over the top, "talent" contests, Mr. Hicks is easily the least talented. Doesn't mean he's devoid of talent...but if you seriously think that Mr. Hicks is a better singer than Mr. Kaufman, you need to get some hearing aids pronto, because you are in need of a auditory specialist...as for performing skills, I will take Kaufman's unpretentious "let the song do the talking approach" any day...Hicks' histrionics as a performer are clearly meant to distract folks from the fact that his voice is pretty ordinary...he is the stuff of parody (Jason Sudekis' "Soul Patrol", Fallon, Julia Louis Dreyfus...Taylor's best attribute is his unfailing good humor, as he seems to be in on the jokes, and can laugh at himself)...he has a residence in Vegas for heavens sake, he's only been around for 8 years and he's already reached the end of the road, the music business is littered with people who were moderately talented at best who made a fortune, getting paid well in music doesn't necessarily equate with artistry and talent...as for Kaufman, he may not even fare as well as Hicks has career wise despite being obviously far more talented...the blue eyed soul thing is gonna have to make a larger comeback for him to score big...there are other singers as good or better (Allen Stone for one) already working that territory who are doing well but not getting rich, if that is the criteria we are going to use to judge the art...the original purveyors of that genre (white dudes with soul music and gospel influences), like Hall and Oates, Boz Scaggs, Michael McDonald, are still performing. The new music in that genre doesn't get a lot of airplay on the radio, or anywhere else...winning one of these contests doesn't necessarily guarantee success...I wish him luck and I hope he can ride his current notoriety to wherever he wants to go...I know several people who know him, and by all accounts he is a terrific person.

      1. Uh, sorry Johnnie, but you are incorrect. Despite the assertions by yourself and various defenders and captains, sports attendance is NOT off significantly at most sporting events in the US. Variances in attendance has been in the range of single digits, both + & - for years now. MLB has had most of its best overall attendance nubers in the last decade, and that trend has been consistent for most major sporting events. The number one issue cited by most fans when asked about attendance is the overall cost of attending. The presence of HD and big screen televisions in home doesn't even register, as a factor for not attending an event. VALUE in the product is the key, and apparently is something lacking in the current ICS. What other explanation is there when with what is routinely touted as the "best" racing on the planet, fans are staying away in DROVES. A "close" title battle into the last event at Fontana, with the "cars and stars" of the ICS, and who showed up? MAYBE 8K. Sorry, but HD TV isn't to blame for that kind of fan apathy.

      3. If she was worth the $ the public outcry over direct tv dropping them would have kept them on their dishes as we have seen with other companies. I too quit watching channel 13 after she showed up since I left channel 8 because of her all show rather than production results. When Randy on 8 corrected her she had a big head and incorrectly challenged his correction for pronunciation of a city. Other antics while she matures was too much for me with her very inaccurate forecasts. All the forecasters were predicting rain until Thursday except Chris. They predicted sunny on Thursday but instead of rain until Thursday upon which the sun would finally make it out in full glory Chris was right on the money just as I too predicted looking at the radar on weather.gov. One thing I love about Angela is the fear you can see in her every time it thunders in the winter. It far exceeds the entertainment value of her body language (high heel noise drags, depression, etc) when her forecasts are so incorrect. Her hair stands on end, you have to see it!!!
