Artists-in-residence for downtown hotels?

In an innovative move that I hope others will copy, Milwaukee's Pfister Hotel has selected its second artist-in-residence.

In march, painter Katie Musolff will be given studio and gallery space in the hotel, along with a monthly stipend. In return, she'll show her work there and provide tours of the hotel's art collection. Hotel visitors will be able to see her working in her studio as well.

Mulsolff was selected by a committee which took into account comments made by the public regarding the final six. You can see  her work here. She'll take over the space from artist Reginald Baylor, whose very different work can be seen here.

So what do you think?

Is this a program that would be practical/desirable for Indianapolis downtown hotels?

In a business climate that rarely fills every room of a hotel, I'm having trouble finding a downside.

Your thoughts?

Lou - great post. I completely agree; this is a fabulous idea. Perhaps you have seen our new event space, The Alcove. (on ground level w. private street entrance). We have created this gallery-like feel to the room by showcasing artist Carol Summers' work. We will be participating in IDADA's First Fridays event - all are welcome. • Love it!
I love this idea! It's a win-win for the hotel and for local artists. Why not!?
  • You bet!
Over the years, hotels have made more of an effort to incorporate dynamic and unique pieces of art into the hotelsâ?? overall decor. One example is the new Art Plaza being placed outside the new Marriott Place properties. Providing more space and opportunities for the artists is only going to grow their connection to the city and provide ways their hard work can be recognized by outside travelers.

    All around excellent idea!
  • Sounds Great
Like this idea a lot...beneficial to hotel and artist alike. Good way to continue to get further exposure for local artists.
  • Potential...
It's a fabulous idea if the artist chosen is relevant in a contemporary art context and is working to push the local scene forward. If the host is just looking for pretty pictures to hang on their wall (which is often the case) then it doesn't really do much to add to the discourse.

Sounds like a no brainer to me.
  • Do it!
Your blog about the program at the Pfister is excellent. The program has been wonderful for the Pfister Hotel, but also very important for the art community in Milwaukee (not to mention the worldwide exposure for me through guests at the hotel)
  • Reservation software
You make hotel reservations using reservation software you have to consider many options, including the type of hotel, the price, location and what kind of services it offers.
