Yes, there were two brothers playing football. But there was also a pair of sisters with the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra (Liz and Ann Hampton Callaway). And Irish Fest. And Oranje. And the International Violin Competition of Indianapolis. And Indy Jazz Fest.

Which--or what else--did you take advantage of this weekend?

  • Annie, Ann & Liz
I saw the Civic's delightful production of "Annie" Saturday night and was wowed by the artistry of the Callaway sisters on Sunday afternoon. It's a real shame there were so many empty seats at the Circle Theater on Sunday afternoon. The sister's put on a GREAT performance filled with wonderful singing and enjoyable humor.
    • Too much?
Another jam-packed arts weekend in Indy. It seems like September and June get festival pileups. While I wish they were more spread out, it was great to see so many different people out in Indy everywhere you went.

I only made it to Oranje. It was an insane party, full of great art and surprisingly cool fashion. Mostly amazed by the very young crowd - they seem to do a much better job of getting a younger audience then most Indy art events despite the $20 price tag.
    • Irish Fest
Irish Fest was a hit for our family this weekend. Also please to see them announce the 1st Annual Indianapolis Highland Games next month. Wish I were going to be in town Oct 9 for that one!

Also, I caught opening night of Beef & Boards Camelot. (Just posting it late). Absolutely delightful. It only took about 2 songs for me to stop comparing to the Richard Harris' performance of Aurthur and get into enjoying this version of Camelot.
    • Sensational Sisters
I was delighted and overjoyed to see Liz and Ann Hampton Callway perform their symphonic debut of SIBLING REVELRY, their sister act that has been traveling the circuit since 1995. An enormous fan of Broadway star, Liz, and mellow jazz singer, Ann, this performance did not disappoint. They performed many duets and solos, and not a single note they sang ever disappointed. I even had the opportunity to meet them in the lobby afterwards, and they were so down-t0-earth and gracious to each and every fan.

Liz mentioned that she was to return in a solo engagement at The Cabaret in August 2010. I will be counting the days...
    • Jazz fest did not impress
I attended my first and last Jazz Festival. Don't know what was worse-lack of food vendors, poor sound system for Al Jarreau, the incredibly rude patrons or the bad facility? Move it to a real outdoor venue and charge 5.00 more to cover the cost. More people will attend and you will be able to hear the acts! As far as boorish patrons who talk incessantly- not sure how to fix that!
    • The Callaway sisters were amazing
I was also at the Hilbert on Sunday and I agree that the Callaway sisters were AMAZING? One of the best shows I have seen in a long time. Their version of the Carly Simon song was wonderful. They were truly having a fun time on stage.
    • Jazz Fest Rocked
JazzFest may have finally found the ideal venue for the size and scale. We were there Saturday afternoon and were knocked out with the quality of the student artists and the cadre of local performers. Let's not forget the other great acts under the JazzFest banner: DeeDee Bridgewater, Preservation Hall Jazz Band and more.

For Jennifer, sorry you were disgruntled with the talking people, but it's no different than going to Verizon -- people talk AND stand all through Dave Mathews, too. It's the total experience. If you want a crystal clear concert performance go to the Jazz Kitchen or fire up your MP3 player. I don't mean to be snarky but they are two different ways to enjoy your favorite artists.
As an Indianapolis Jazz Foundation Board member we are proud to support the new Indy JazzFest.
    • Oktoberfest
always love the annual knockwurst and german potato salad on the rooftop of the Fountain Square Theater. A shame it's only once per year. :)
    • snooze fest
i missed the jazz kitchen shows due to work, had errands to run all saturday, but still made it in time to see the mike stern band...just in time for a nap. the sound was blagh bad - would've had to either be one of three people standing to watch some mediocre fusion or just given up and talked like everyone else. the location wasnt so bad but i have to agree, lack of vendors and the 12 minute walk back to the village wasnt convenient. the weather was nice, the fields grass was already dead, but that line-up was more like a intro to jazz class that was afraid to offend anyone.
