A&E odds and ends: Heartland, Palladium, and...zombies

Some odds and ends from my A&E files.

--The Heartland Film Festival reports a 10.4% uptick in screening attendance this year, with 36 sold-out shows. The winners this year include "The Space Between," (Best Dramatic Feature) and "Freedom Riders" (Best Documentary Feature), both of which made my recommended list. Here's wishing both films future success reaching audiences.

--The Palladium isn't opening in Carmel until 2011, but music will be heard there soon as performers begin to help tune the hall. The American Pianists Association will be hosting an invite-only event in November to help tweak the acoustics. This and other tune up programs--by groups including the Indianapolis Chamber Orchestra, the Carmel Symphony Orchestra, and more--are being treated as rehearsals. The groups are allowed to invite or not invite patrons as they wish--with the understanding that tickets cannot be sold. Throughout the process, the acoustics will be adjusted to bring the hall up to its ideal by the official opening.

--In a books-by-Indiana-authors round-up a few months back, I mentioned Sam Stall's book "Night of the Living Trekkies," which concerns the siege of a science fiction convention by an army of the living dead. In a pulling-all-the-stops-out marketing move, the publisher has created a video trailer for the book that rivals the production quality on the coming attractions shorts for major films. For a Halloween kick, check it out here. (Warning: It's a bit bloody.)

--Congratulations to the Fine Arts Society/WICR, who proved last night what arts and education can do--the team won Indy Reads' Spelling Bee, narrowly beating a crew from the Indianapolis-Marion County Public Library.

--I'll be hosting a screening of "Bride of Frankenstein" at the Indianapolis Museum of Art this Friday. Come out to see what I'd argue is one of the best three sequels ever made. Care to guess my other favorites?

Your thoughts on any of the above?

  • Night of the Living Zombies
This book is awesome!! I haven't laughed this much reading a book in a long time! And there are as many Star Wars references as Star Trek!! Even Babylon 5 gets a shout out!! And the "trailer" is better than most movie trailers are these days!! Sam needs to have a local Indy appearance as Kevin is having them all over LA!!
  • Almost...but not quite
All I can say, Lou, is: how could I get nine out of 10 correct during my round as a speller for WFYI and miss a simple word like SINEW???

    Jim Brown
  • Tuning the hall
Tuning the hall with the likes of the ICO and CSO is a great way to "make nice" with the locals. I'm not sure it effectively helps the Palladium folks prepare themselves for the expectations of the Cleveland Orchestra.
  • No nicey nice
The only thing that has to be prepared is the Carmel taxpayer's wallets. They are going to have to be opened wide to subsidize the $7 million per year operating budget, including the $1 million per year going right straight to Michael Feinstein. I'm sure when IBJ writes the article about the CRC not being able to make its bond payment and the taxpayer's are sent a bill to cover it and that the Carmel government will be spending millions and millions of dollars on this thing while other arts organizations are struggling just to say open, well, everybody is going to act so surprised!!! I could be wrong, and am willing to admit it if that is the case, but I really don't think I am. If everything was hunky-dory there wouldn't be so many secrets.

  5. Problem: most of the people responding to this article don't know about this service AT ALL! Why? Lack of awareness. This isn't IndyGo. This is CIRTA: might as well be the mattress company because they are asleep at the wheel - something like 3 directors over the last year? Playing with federal grant money is great! This "region" wants commuter rail service, has spent MILLIONS on Transportation studies yet can't even support a commuter bus line? This is largely for suburban riders to get to downtown - not for "service people to work in our hotels and restaurants" ! Get your head out of your backside!! These are professionals, students etc. that don't want to fight traffic, save some money on parking, gas, stress.... if CIRTA would put their federal money into widely promoting the sevive to Greenwood, Fishers & Carmel instead of finding directors and studies - this would be a successful service. Our family uses(d) it daily for the last several years - but the recent uncertainty & now unreliability due to cuts from Carmel has been a problem. Now, costs us an additional $350/month for gas & parking ( $4200/year) plus vehicle wear, service, environmental impact ... YES - this REGION needs this this type of service in order to keep growing and getting the people it needs to fill skilled positions in downtown Indianapolis. Think outside of your own car !!!
