Again, on government reform

Credit Ed DeLaney, a Democrat who represents Indiana House District 86 in northern Marion County and southern Hamilton County, for introducing a bill that would eliminate township government and move the functions to counties.

Many observers doubt the bill, or others like it, will go far in this short session, largely because fellow House Democrats have blocked them in the past.

Most opposition has come from legislators, both Democrats and Republicans, worried that eliminating township government would gut their farm teams and toss friends out of jobs.

Given the pressures to cut costs in government, are the odds of government reform any better this time? And if legislators don't act to cut costs, will voters punish them this fall?

    The top priority in local government reform ought to be prohibiting public employees from being elected to positions from which they can vote on their own salaries and benefits. The second priority ought to be moving municipal elections to even-numbered years.

    I will be watching the reform debate very carefully and if my legislators do not vote in favor of eliminating Township Trustee's, then I will vote against the legislator. Justifying the economical abuse by Trustees cannot be justified by a patronage system and my vote is going to be based on this issue.
