Nonstop schedule at airport slips by one destination

Indianapolis International Airport has lost two nonstop-flight destinations and gained one in time for the summer travel season.

The airport, which has been trying to beef up direct service, will have 32 nonstop destinations from Memorial Day through Labor Day, down one from summer 2012, spokesman Carlo Bertolini said. The airport expects to have an average of 142 daily nonstop departures, down from 144 last year.

The 1.4-percent decline is on par with the national aviation trend, Bertolini said. The Bureau of Transportation Statistics reported a 1.7-percent drop in domestic and international service from 2011 to 2012.

Off the schedule for this summer is Vision Airlines’ short-lived service to Myrtle Beach, S.C. Vision announced the nonstop flights from Indianapolis and several Ohio cities a year ago. The vacation-oriented airline, based in Suwanee, Ga., no longer lists any Midwest cities as points of origin.

Southwest Airlines in November canceled flights from Indianapolis to Midway International Airport in Chicago. Southwest found that 88 percent of passengers on the route were connecting to other flights, so the airline couldn’t generate enough revenue from local Chicago-bound travelers to support it, Bertolini said.

Southwest is making up for the lost destination with new service to Houston Hobby Airport, one of its focus sites.

Not included in the summer-season total is new nonstop service to Los Angeles by American Airlines, which doesn't begin until Aug. 27.

    Yes to SFO.
  • Agreed. SFO is sorely needed.
I agree with IndyXtopher. Service to SFO is needed, preferably on Virgin America.
  • Need Non-stop SFO Service
Still waiting for sorely needed non-stop service to San Francisco! More non-stop competition to Las Vegas would be a plus too.
