Ex-Greenfield mayor to run for Fishers council

Former Greenfield Mayor Brad DeReamer on Thursday announced his candidacy for Fishers City Council.

DeReamer, 66,  moved to Fishers last year to be close to his daughter and three grandchildren. He even experimented with retirement after more than 40 years as an entrepreneur.

“I promised my wife I’d try it for a year,” he said. That clock ran out last month.

Residents of the fast-growing suburb will elect their first mayor, city clerk and nine-member city council and city clerk next year after voting last November to turn the town of 80,000 into a second-class city.

DeReamer said Fishers officials supported him while he was Greenfield’s mayor from 2008 to 2011, and he wants to return the favor by helping to guide community growth.

He believes his experience with land surveying, civil engineering and real estate—just a sampling of the industries he has worked in as a business owner—will provide valuable insight.

“There’s still a lot I can contribute,” said DeReamer, who lost a bid for re-election in Greenfield.

So why not run for the city’s top job? DeReamer said he has been there and done that, though he might reconsider a mayoral run if a like-minded candidate doesn’t enter the race.

Longtime Town Council President Walt Kelly is the only mayoral candidate to throw his hat in the ring so far, kicking off his campaign last month.

Candidates cannot run for both mayor and council simulanteously. The official filing period begins in January.

Six of the new city council members will represent districts of roughly equal population; three will be elected at-large.

  • Choices
Mr. DeReamer is too new to the Fishers area to understand the dynamics of our community. He has some "political" experience from having spent most of his adult life in Greenfield, but Greenfield and Fishers are very different. Our community doesn't need "politics" infused into the Mayor's office and I believe that's all that Mr. DeReamer has to offer. Mr. DeReamer seems to be a bit of a political opportunist who moved to Fishers because he saw an opportunity to sell himself for Mayor once the recent "City" ballot initiative was approved. We need experienced members of our community to provide the leadership that is needed to guide us through the transition from a "Town" to a "City" - not an outsider.

  1. I keep wondering why I keep hearing about this problem of corporations leaving America, and I never hear a reasonable proposal to lower corporate tax rates and raise personal rates on income from capital gains and dividends, especially for high earners. It is just too simple of a solution for Congress to embrace?

  4. Bass Pro Shops would be good for the mall as well as a Giant Eagle Market District or a Jungle Jim's International Market Place grocery store like the one near Cincinnati Ohio.A Disney quest indoor theme park would be good.An Academy outdoor store would be good too.Indoor Circus shows and magic shows would be good as well. A casino with sports bar would be good.A Disney theater inside that shows movies and Broadway shows would work.Nashville Tennessee concert shops with indoor neon lights would be good. How about a theater that shows travel shows and theme parks. A train store would be good. How about a giant toy store with high tech video games.
