Upscale hotel, restaurant planned for I-465 interchange

St. Louis-based Drury Hotels Co. is planning its third Indianapolis-area location: A 10-story Drury Plaza Hotel slated for the northeast corner of 96th and Meridian streets, overlooking Interstate 465.

Preliminary plans were filed with a rezoning request in Carmel last month. Drury is proposing a planned unit development ordinance that would govern design standards on the site.

The 10.5-acre property, located just west of the Parkwood Crossing office park, also would include a stand-alone restaurant along the lines of Bonefish Grill, Seasons 52 or Ocean Prime.

The family-owned hotel chain operates six other upscale Drury Plaza Hotels in the Midwest and Texas. All told, Drury has 130 hotels in 20 states; it operates a Drury Inn on Michigan Road in Indianapolis and a Drury Inn & Suites on Shadeland Avenue.

The new location would include a hotel of at least 160,000 square feet and a 5,000-square-foot or larger restaurant, according to Drury’s proposal. A minimum of 380 parking spaces—and 10 spots for bicycle parking—would be provided.

Carmel’s comprehensive land-use plan identifies the property as an “employment node” targeted for six- to 10-story commercial buildings that serve businesses and their employees. Drury hopes to make the case that a hotel and restaurant fit the bill.

The Carmel Plan Commission is expected to take up the PUD request at its November meeting. Final approval would have to come from City Council.

  • Approved...IF
I used to work in Parkwood for years and the 96th and Meridian intersection is a nightmare at rush hour and lunch time. A hotel is only going to add to the traffic issues. That said, that corner has been vacant for ages. Many years ago there was a filling station but that's been gone maybe 10 years?!? Returning this corner to usefulness is a good idea and will add to Carmel's tax base - also a good thing. The bottom line in my opinion is that approval should be contingent upon Drury contributing funds to the widening / reconstruction of that intersection that in a best case scenario should happen in tandem with the reconstruction of 465 as part of the US 31 Hamilton County project.
  • Parking lot view is ugly
I have a hard time believing that Carmel will approve it with the building positioned as it is in the rendering. Most building's in the 31 corridor front Hwy 31, with the parking on the sides or behind.
  • uggggh!
A prominent corner and intersection like 96th & Meridian certainly deservers a better site and building design than that! Valet is right, move the mid-high-rise to front edge of property, and maybe design a custom structure for the site instead of the anywhere cornfield USA that Drury is showing...and yes the traffic engress-egress will be a guaranteed nightmare.
  • Location
Perhaps the location on the property is to get it as far away from the high traffic roads for quieter rooms for the patrons stay.
  • Parking
The view of the parking lot can be screened / buffered by a creative use of berms and landscaping. I agree with Cindy. I don't want to stay in a hotel with noisy traffic close to my room. Plus, the value in the outlot is the high visibility. Whoever purchaes that site wants the high profile corner location. The hotel doesn't need it.
  • Drury has no appeal
Carmel should reject this project based solely on the brand of hotel.
  • I-465 reconfiguration
If the original plan to reconfigure the 465/Meridian interchange is still followed, a chuck of land on the northwest corner of the lot will be taken over for a couple flyover ramps. This could be why the hotel is where it is. There may not be room along the Meridian side or 465 side of the lot once the new flyover ramps are built. And they most definitely want the restaurant situated as close to the intersection as possible.
  • Rendering
In fact, looking more at this rendering, I think it shows the only area they have to build on after INDOT takes over the rest. So without moving the restaurant, I don't know that they have much choice in position of the hotel.
  • Hardly Upscale
I would hardly consider Drury Inn as an upscale hotel chain. US31/Meridian in Carmel has plenty of hotel the same price point/standard as this hotel. If Carmel really wants a high-end hotel (which I think it needs), especially for execs/business people in town for the surrounding companies, it should look at a true 3-4 star hotel. I do agree however, that a nice restaurant along the lines of a Bonefish would be great there!

Based on the existing Drury ends in metro Indy I cannot imagine this owner/brand even being considered for this location. At best he shutters his 2 existing outdated and tired units leaving dark holes in their wake.
    • It's Nicer than other Drury's
Drury Inn and Drury Plaza are different. Drury Plaza is a higher end brand of Drury Hotels. Also, Carmel does have another 4-star hotel. It's the Renaissance off of U.S. 31 north of 116th Street.
    • Upscale?
I too am surprised that Drury is considered "upscale". They need to lose the name as most associate it as nothing more than a Hampton Inn-type hotel.
    • Misperception of Drury
I believe some have a misperception of the Drury Plaza upscale brand. I recently stayed at Marriott Downtown Indy and Doubletree Nashville within the past 10 days, and at the Drury Plaza hotel in Franklin, TN (south Nashville). The new upscale Drury is as good or better than any of these brands. Especially tied in with a managed branded restaurant like Bonefish or Granite City Brewery, business travelers in the know, know that Drury Plaza is a great choice - upscale and value. Carmel would do well at securing a reputable hotel like Drury.
      • Not misperceptions of Drury Brand
I don't think anyone has misperceptions of the Drury brand. It simply isn't that valuable. Business travelers want to stay with a familiar brand, not an overgrown mom and pop regional brand. Travelers coming from either coast have never heard of Drury and won't have any loyalty program benefits or amenities to make them want to stay there. As a frequent business traveler why would I choose Drury-anything over a Hilton, Marriott, or Hyatt brand? Lack of national branding was a part of The Canterbury's recent troubles. I suspect that hotel will thrive once it is resurrected as Le Meridien.

      5. Problem: most of the people responding to this article don't know about this service AT ALL! Why? Lack of awareness. This isn't IndyGo. This is CIRTA: might as well be the mattress company because they are asleep at the wheel - something like 3 directors over the last year? Playing with federal grant money is great! This "region" wants commuter rail service, has spent MILLIONS on Transportation studies yet can't even support a commuter bus line? This is largely for suburban riders to get to downtown - not for "service people to work in our hotels and restaurants" ! Get your head out of your backside!! These are professionals, students etc. that don't want to fight traffic, save some money on parking, gas, stress.... if CIRTA would put their federal money into widely promoting the sevive to Greenwood, Fishers & Carmel instead of finding directors and studies - this would be a successful service. Our family uses(d) it daily for the last several years - but the recent uncertainty & now unreliability due to cuts from Carmel has been a problem. Now, costs us an additional $350/month for gas & parking ( $4200/year) plus vehicle wear, service, environmental impact ... YES - this REGION needs this this type of service in order to keep growing and getting the people it needs to fill skilled positions in downtown Indianapolis. Think outside of your own car !!!
