Chipotle headed downtown to Washington and Meridian

Chipotle IndyIt looks as though a fast-casual Mexican battle may be brewing downtown. Local retail brokers say Chipotle will occupy the first-floor space of a three-story retail and office building slated to fill the vacant lot at 6 E. Washington St. Right around the corner, at 9 N. Meridian St., is a Qdoba, where the Wheat Ridge, Colo.-based eatery has done quite well. How much business will Chipotle take from Qdoba?  Only time will tell. With 20 locations in the Indianapolis metro area, Qdoba has a larger presence than Chipotle, which boasts five local restaurants. Qdoba also is adding a second downtown location at CityWay. The new Chipotle would be the Denver-based chain's first downtown. Meanwhile, plans are progressing on developer Uptown Realty Investors’ project to fill the space on East Washington Street.  Bill Ehret, a real estate broker and partner with John Demaree, also owns the building next door that houses Jos. A. Bank and the seven-story McQuat Building, which the two have transformed into apartments with a first-floor retail space. The city’s Metropolitan Development Commission is set to consider the project on April 3. The architect on the new building is Axis.

  • Just talked about this at lunch today
A coworker and I walked to the downtown Qdoba today and were just talking about how we needed a Chipotle downtown. I personally like Qdoba better. How interesting that Chipotle is locating right around the corner from Q. Time will tell, indeed.
    • Both will Succeed
I go to both equally. Each has their perks. Chipotle for the burrito's, Qdoba for the nachos! Hopefully, Chipotle will have more seating than Qdoba. I worked downtown for 5 years and avoided it because it was always too busy.
    • Yes!
I've been wanting one for 8 years! Chipotle is way better for lunch/dinner than Qdoba. Qdoba only wins in the breakfast burrito category!
    • Steam your tortillas...or go Home!
Until Chipotle steams their tortilla's they will always be second to QDoba!
    • gimme dat burrito bowl
Every time i eat at qdoba i get sick, stopped doing so years ago, chipotle is more sustainable and uses better ingredients. For a much better product overall and much fresher using local produce, i hate that they have such a limited footprint all these years
    • Wondering
I'm wondering if anyone has heard anymore news on this?
      • Sign's up
The sign is on the building, but I don't know if they are open quite yet.
