Chicago staple Giordano's snags Sangiovese space

One of Chicago’s best-known pizzerias is coming to Indianapolis and taking the space formerly occupied by an upscale Italian restaurant on the city’s northeast side.

giordano's logo 225pxGiordano’s has signed a lease to occupy the 4,000 square feet at 4110 E. 82nd St. in the renovated Rivers Edge shopping center where Sangiovese Ristorante has long been located, according to information submitted to IBJ by Indy-based Sitehawk Retail Real Estate.

Local restaurateur Gino Pizzi, who owns Ambrosia in Broad Ripple, founded Sangiovese in 1994 and sold it to Chris Evans in 2007, according to the restaurant’s website.

Sangiovese declined to renew its lease, according to a source familiar with the deal, and is searching for new space. Evans could not immediately be reached for comment. It is not clear when the restaurant will close.

Rivers Edge owner Kite Realty Group Trust renovated the shopping center and landed popular anchors Nordstrom Rack and The Container Store in 2011.

The Rivers Edge location will be Giordano’s first in Indiana and among just a handful outside of the Chicago area. It has 41 restaurants in the Windy City and neighboring suburbs, and three in Florida.

Giordano’s has been recognized as “Chicago’s Best Pizza” by the Chicago Tribune, New York Times, CBS and NBC, according to its website.

Known for its signature stuffed pies, Giordano’s also serves thin-crust pizzas, appetizers, salads, sandwiches and Italian dishes.  

Brothers Efren and Joseph Boglio moved to Chicago from Italy to start their own pizza business, opening their first store in 1974 on the city’s south side using their mother’s recipe for stuffed pizza.

In other restaurant news:

— The Tamale Place is set to open June 7 in 2,600 square feet at 1155 E. Stop 11 Road, Suite D, on the city’s south side. The restaurant opened early this year at City Market. Its original location at 5226 Rockville Road was featured in season 12 of Guy Fieri’s "Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives television show.

— The Dawg House Dueling Piano Bar has leased 4,800 square feet on the ground floor of 6235 N. Guilford Ave. The building in Broad Ripple in recent years housed the Tru nightclub and Buffalo Wild Wings Grill & Bar. Monon Housing Partners LLC in April bought the building known as Mustard Hall near the southeast corner of Broad Ripple and Guilford avenues.

        Giordano's had a location once in Northwest Indiana in Merrillville. They closed many years ago, and hands down, have the best stuffed pizza. Can't wait for them to open and take my wife there.

        I'm sorry to hear that Sangiovese is/may be closing. We've certainly enjoyed the food and the staff for years. I truly hope they reopen somewhere, and we'll be back. In the meantime, need to get over there before they leave!!!

          Sorry to see that we are losing a local restaurant, Sangiovese is one of our favorite spots. I hope they find a suitable location to relocate.

          If you haven't been fortunate to try Giordano's pizza in the past, you absolutely have to go there when this one opens up. I used to live in the Chicago area, and my goodness... this is one thing I missed about it. Definitely a win for the area.

            I'm sure the pizza is good, but I'm far more concerned about missing Sangiovese more than I am excited about yet a millionth other option for pizza. We love the food and ambiance at Sangiovese. We've spent many evenings by the piano, enjoying the patio and more than a few snowy dinners in front of their fireplace. Hopefully they find a place so they can relocate.

              This is GREAT NEWS for eveything but my waistline and wallet. Giordano’s is fantastic. Real Stuffed Pizza. Been to Sangiovese once and was not that impressed. I love local places but in the end the food and price have to be right.

              Zacky's food is ok, but way, way too high priced. $1 more per hot dog than Portillos. Went there once. Never been back.

              I concur. Indianapolis has become a mecca for chain restaurants, and we make it a point to never eat at a chain. I will admit that we make exceptions for locally-owned "small" chains, but I'd much rather have my money staying here, rather than going to some out-of-state owner. I will follow Sangiovese, for sure!!!!!

                Try Zacky's hot dogs in Carmel on Rangeline. I recommend the BLT dog.

                Every major city has become a mecca for chains! Thats one of the perks of becoming a major city. We also get more chains like Whole Foods and Fresh Market too, or are you to 'local' to shop there as well. Just because its local doesnt mean the money stays in town either, they sure don't pay employees anymore than the big bad chains.

                  Great news about Giordano's. There is some good pizza in town, but nothing like Giordano's. Now we just need a Portillo's. Chicago Hot Dog Co. had good dogs and Italian beef but they closed down a few months ago. Also I wasn't impressed with Sangiovese. My wife and I went there once. The ravioli tasted like Chef Boyardee but cost a lot more.

                  I laughed out loud at Preston's post that he only eats "local", but you beat me to the real point...many chains are in fact synonymous with homogenized unimaginative pub food...such is not the case with Girodano' for the few here who thought Sangiovese was a good place (I ate there twice...decent, nothing amazing food wise), the article says Mr. Evans is looking for a new spot...hopefully it is conveniently located for those of you who love the for Giordanos, we eat there on any trip to Chicago, along with one of Rick Bayliss' Mexican places, Frontera, or Tompalobampo...Giordano's is magnificent, chain or not...and the next time I am up that way I will try Lou Malnati's since one poster says that is even better (not sure I can stand that)...getting a Portillo's would be nice too...chain doesn't always mean bad...Local doesn't always mean good...

                  When DJ's hit town, it's come close to satisfying my hotdog itch. They've also got brats, etc. They've since added hamburger and tenderloin, neither of which I've tried...yes. They spread out a bit and tried a store in Castleton (West of Marsh) and it was shuttered rather quickly.
                • Home for Chains?
                  I think Indianapolis used to serve as an expansion test beyond "big" cities. I remember one microbrew who didn't have French dressing for my salad, which they didn't have. I took the waitress aside and told her to find another job because they weren't going to last very long. I have a very uncanny ability to identify those which will die. The first time in the first two weeks, then again (if they're still open) at 8 months. In the twenty-eight years my wife & I have been together, only one restaurant has escaped my observation of death - not always food quality but undercapitalization. In this case, why did I see French as a red flag? No one has salad without French (or its siblings) indicates they haven't scoped out their market in Indy. So many tomato-based products as a staple in our diets. That alone shouldn't sink someone, but if they miss that, then they miss many other things. Think of it as putting your ear to the ground and hearing one buffalo far ahead of the herd.

                  What is this, East East Chicago, Indiana? Indianapolis is not a suburb of Chicago and is not affiliated with Chicago. So what's with all these Chicago eateries coming here? Why not develop authentic Indianapolis restaurants? Makes me sick...they need to go to Detroit. The Motor City need the new business more than we do and Chicagoans feel more at home in Detroit anyway.

                    I went to college in Chicago and used to love Giordanos in the 1990's. Haven't had a good one since in my last 4 or 5 pies there. 2 weekends ago, an employee was eating toppings at the make table, it was 15 minutes past quotd time, at 10pm on a Sunday. Medium thin crust,1.5 of 5 star, $24.00, crap. JACK'S PIZZA, You Can't Top It! Indy's best kept secret since 1966 will continue to get my pizza money.

                      Please bring a Sprinkles to Indianapolis, tired of driving to Chicago for cupcakes, popcorn and that delicious Harvest Salad at Giordano's!... I love my hometown don't get me wrong but I will drive for GOOD food!

                      Jack's Pizza opened a location in Nora and I live in the area and gave it a whirl. Was not that impressed and didn't get the best bang for the buck. I must not have been the only one because there location in Nora closed in less than 6 months. Looking forward to Giordanos...grew up on it while living in Chicago.

                      You have misinformation about Sangiovese, Gino Pizzi sold in 2001 to Kosta and Kathy Protopapadakis. They owned it until 2007 when they sold it to Chris Evans.
