Here's a wide-ranging roundup of new food and drink venues across the city. We'll start in the growing Fletcher Place neighborhood between the Mile Square and Fountain Square, which has a new microbrewery:

Chilly Water Brewing Co. opened June 27 at 719 Virginia Ave., Suite 105, in The Hinge, a mixed-use development with 56 market-rate apartments along with 12,000 square feet of commercial space mostly occupied by Rook restaurant and The Bureau.

The microbrewery, operated by Skip DuVall and his wife, McKee, occupies about 2,800 square feet and seats 50 inside and 30 outside. It features two regular beers, a pilsner and a pale ale, in addition to seasonal choices.

Local beer connoisseurs might remember DuVall from his days as the head brewer at the former Alcatraz Brewing Co. downtown before helping open Fountain Square Brewing Co.

In keeping with the beer theme:

The District Tap is set to open in mid-August at 3720 E. 82nd St., last occupied by Brewstone Beer Co. It closed in August and was the lastest casualty in a string of failures at the snakebitten site. The District Tap is led by Kurt Cohen, owner of the Arni's Restaurant pizza chain.

At the CityWay development downtown:

Gandolfo's deli 225 pxGandolfo’s New York Delicatessen is taking the space at 309 S. Delaware St. in CityWay vacated by Orange Leaf Frozen Yogurt.

Gandolfo’s should open this summer. It also has plans for a location in Noblesville, according to its website. Other stores are in Greenwood and Bloomington. The deli started in 1989 in Salt Lake City and now has nearly 30 locations in 13 states.

Sandwiches on the menu include the Rockefeller Reuben, Wheat Hampton, King of Queens and Carnegie Hall.

Yolk is set to open by July 15. The upscale breakfast eatery will occupy 4,410 square feet on South Street, in the Buckingham Cos. mixed-use development.

Owner Taki Kastanis opened his first Yolk in Chicago in 2006 and now has four locations in the Windy City. The CityWay location will be Yolk’s first outside of Chicago.

Near Mass Ave.:

Union 50 is open at 620 N. East St. It’s operated by Mike Cunningham, who owns Mass Ave eateries Bru and Mesh. IBJ first reported on Cunningham's plan in March 2013.

The restaurant takes its name from the history of the building, which was constructed in 1950 and served several years as a union hall. The menu is heavy on “chef-driven American cuisine.”

In Broad Ripple:

Sweeties Gourmet Treats at 1081 Broad Ripple Ave. is set to move by the end of the month to the former Parcha Sweets location at 2101 Broad Ripple Ave. near Keystone Avenue. Sweeties makes cakes, cupcakes, pies and cobblers.

Outside Indianapolis:

El Toro has taken the space at 1576 W. Oak St. in Zionsville formerly occupied by the Oobatz! pizzeria. The Champaign, Ill.-based Mexican restaurant has 10 locations in eastern Illinois, as well as one each in Cincinnati and Walton, Ky.

  • the deli?
A New York "Deli" from Utah, down the street from Shapiro's? My excitement is equal to the number of In-N-Out Burgers in Indianapolis.
    • the deli
All they have to do is sell sandwiches for less than 15 bucks and they'll compete with Shapiro's just fine. :)
      • Chains
        Yay, more chains!!!!!!!1
      • No competition for Shapiros
The Noblesville location is going in the vacant space at the Shell gas station next to Mike' Express Carwash on Campus Pkwy across from Hamilton Town Center. I don't think the downtown location will be any sort of competition to Shapiro's.
      • Chains
*snore* Sorry, someone complained about chains again. I hope Jimmer is planning on opening a restaurant, since he thinks it must be so easy to do. I, for one, don't have a problem with chains if they are providing something unique to the market. It's also refreshing to see new stuff open downtown before anywhere else. It is a nice change from everything happening north of 86th.
      • Chains?
I don't know if I would classify some of the new places as chains. According to the article, they don't have locations in more than 2-3 states and these will be the first in Indiana. I say embrace it!
      • Macaroni Grill
I might have missed seeing it here, but the Macaroni Grill's Carmel location at 116th & Keystone has closed.
      • Chains
Good to see more retail coming to City Way. I'm not the biggest fan of chains, but like someone else mentioned, these are small chains. Plus, no matter what city, even NYC, you are going to have chains in the main part of downtown.
      • Response
Our meat is fresh and made on site. We use the finest and top USDA grading. Some people like Ponderosa and others like Capital Grill.
        • Why angst over chains?
I *really* do not understand the crying over new chains coming to Indianapokis. Why? I honestly would rather see 5 great chains come to Indianapolis than 50 independents open, who serve so-so food at high prices. What chains do I want? Portillos and In and Out Burger would be a great start! as for Shapiro's goes - you are doing great Brian. The double patty chopped steak dinner with two sides and bread is the best value in downtown!

        1. Uh, sorry Johnnie, but you are incorrect. Despite the assertions by yourself and various defenders and captains, sports attendance is NOT off significantly at most sporting events in the US. Variances in attendance has been in the range of single digits, both + & - for years now. MLB has had most of its best overall attendance nubers in the last decade, and that trend has been consistent for most major sporting events. The number one issue cited by most fans when asked about attendance is the overall cost of attending. The presence of HD and big screen televisions in home doesn't even register, as a factor for not attending an event. VALUE in the product is the key, and apparently is something lacking in the current ICS. What other explanation is there when with what is routinely touted as the "best" racing on the planet, fans are staying away in DROVES. A "close" title battle into the last event at Fontana, with the "cars and stars" of the ICS, and who showed up? MAYBE 8K. Sorry, but HD TV isn't to blame for that kind of fan apathy.

        3. If she was worth the $ the public outcry over direct tv dropping them would have kept them on their dishes as we have seen with other companies. I too quit watching channel 13 after she showed up since I left channel 8 because of her all show rather than production results. When Randy on 8 corrected her she had a big head and incorrectly challenged his correction for pronunciation of a city. Other antics while she matures was too much for me with her very inaccurate forecasts. All the forecasters were predicting rain until Thursday except Chris. They predicted sunny on Thursday but instead of rain until Thursday upon which the sun would finally make it out in full glory Chris was right on the money just as I too predicted looking at the radar on weather.gov. One thing I love about Angela is the fear you can see in her every time it thunders in the winter. It far exceeds the entertainment value of her body language (high heel noise drags, depression, etc) when her forecasts are so incorrect. Her hair stands on end, you have to see it!!!
