Rokita says GOP redistricting plan not enough

Indiana Secretary of State Todd Rokita is pleased that state Senate Republicans have proposed changes to the way legislative districts are drawn, but he says they don't go far enough.

Senate Republicans said Thursday that they plan to introduce a bill in the upcoming session that would require lawmakers who draw new maps in 2011 to use new guidelines. They want to keep districts compact and try to avoid dividing communities, neighborhoods and precincts.

They also want to create a two-year study committee that could ultimately lead to establishing an independent commission to draw new maps every 10 years.

Republican Rokita says the state needs redistricting reform now, and the GOP plan should prohibit political data from being used in drawing maps for partisan purposes.
