The city’s Department of Code Enforcement on Tuesday denied the license applications of seven taxi companies that collectively operate about 160 cabs in Indianapolis.

Licenses were denied for failing to either have a dispatch facility or failing to staff the facility. Additional violations included failing to provide a dispatch log or failing to provide a complete log that complied with city code.

The taxi companies no longer licensed are A-Z Airport, Broad Ripple Village Taxi, Capital Taxi, Freedom Cab, Metro Taxi, Midwest Taxi and Nationwide Taxi.

“Businesses are expected to adhere to the provisions of code, as well as abide by the terms of their license,” Rick Powers, director of the Department of Code Enforcement, said in a written statement. “These license denials illustrate just one example of how CDE uses licensing as a means to deter illegal behaviors that impact the quality of life in the city.”

The city said the cab companies should not be operating unless a new license application is submitted and approved.
