Fans beating down doors to get into NFL Combine

Indianapolis Colts General Manager Ryan Grigson calls it “the ultimate job interview.”

The NFL Scouting Combine used to be a little-known, behind-the-scenes event used by NFL coaches, scouts and front office personnel to evaluate players before the April draft.

In recent years, the growing NFL fan base has become increasingly intrigued with the process teams use to fill their rosters.

There are those who decry the commercialization of the Combine, arguing that it should remain a working event for scouts and coaches, while others applaud opening up a process that so many fans and sponsors find interesting.

One thing is certain; the event brings a lot of publicity to the NFL, prospective players and the city of Indianapolis.

Once covered by a handful of reporters, the Combine, running Feb. 20-26 this year, will attract 800 credentialed media members to Indianapolis. Reporters will chronicle players’ every move and the numerous observations made by scouts and coaches.

It’s humorous to think that scads of skeptics once doubted the Scouting Combine would attract many television viewers. Last year, more than 6.5 million people watched, nearly double the 3.7 million who watched in 2007. League officials predict 7 million fans will watch this year.

A year after allowing fans to attend the NFL Scouting Combine in Lucas Oil Stadium for the first time in 2012, league officials are expanding access to the general public from one to two days.

Demand for tickets was so high last year that NFL officials are doubling the number this year—to 600.

Fans must apply for Combine tickets at 1iota.com, providing a short essay on why they are worthy of those sought-after tickets.

Fans who win get an up-close look at the Combine on Feb. 23 or 24.

Among the things fans can see live is the 40-yard dash for quarterbacks, wide receivers, offensive linemen and tight ends, and position skill drills.

Fans who get in also get to talk with former NFL players Marshall Faulk, Jevon Kearse and Fred Taylor and have an opportunity to win NFL-centric prizes.

The tickets are free, but cannot be sold and are not transferable.

  • Combine
I think the combine, having been in Indy for so long, has contributed to making this a football town. Interest is heightened locally in the draft and the people here have become more educated about the players, the NFL and football in general.

I attended this event last year and it was extremely boring. I consider myself a huge NFL fan and have had Colts season tickets in the past. We left after a couple hours. The organizers require that you remain silent, or at most whisper and there are restrictions on how many people can leave their seats at the same time. We were seated in the 400 level, 50-yard line, great seats for a game but the action was all in one end zone and tough to follow. Interesting idea to invite fans, but would never go again and have advised friends not to go.

We went last year and really enjoyed it. Take binoculars, that helps. Best of all, it is FREE.
        • OUCH
          September can't come soon enough!

        5. Problem: most of the people responding to this article don't know about this service AT ALL! Why? Lack of awareness. This isn't IndyGo. This is CIRTA: might as well be the mattress company because they are asleep at the wheel - something like 3 directors over the last year? Playing with federal grant money is great! This "region" wants commuter rail service, has spent MILLIONS on Transportation studies yet can't even support a commuter bus line? This is largely for suburban riders to get to downtown - not for "service people to work in our hotels and restaurants" ! Get your head out of your backside!! These are professionals, students etc. that don't want to fight traffic, save some money on parking, gas, stress.... if CIRTA would put their federal money into widely promoting the sevive to Greenwood, Fishers & Carmel instead of finding directors and studies - this would be a successful service. Our family uses(d) it daily for the last several years - but the recent uncertainty & now unreliability due to cuts from Carmel has been a problem. Now, costs us an additional $350/month for gas & parking ( $4200/year) plus vehicle wear, service, environmental impact ... YES - this REGION needs this this type of service in order to keep growing and getting the people it needs to fill skilled positions in downtown Indianapolis. Think outside of your own car !!!
