The people being laid off are spread throughout the hospital, including human resources, facilities and management, said St. Vincent spokesman Johnny Smith. He said St. Vincent has made no job cuts at any of its 17 other hospitals throughout the state.
“Hospitals nationwide are experiencing a decline in elective procedures and significant increases in uncompensated care,” Smith said. “We have to remain fiscally viable for our future.”
St. Vincent leaders also are trying to save costs by streamlining administration procedures in the emergency room, improving its clinical documentation processes and saving on purchases of medical supplies.
St. Vincent employs 5,400 people in Indiana. The cuts represent about 1 percent of its total workforce.
