could bring 182 jobs to the city by the end of 2012, the company announced Wednesday afternoon.
The company will begin hiring additional pharmacy technicians next month to work at a facility located
at the Indianapolis International Airport.
The specialty drug distribution facility was launched
in 2007 by Indianapolis-based WellPoint Inc. to help manage the complex and the costly biotech drugs taken
by some of its patients.
But, in December, Express Scripts acquired WellPoint’s pharmacy benefit subsidiary,
called NextRx, for $4.7 billion.
About 400 workers at the Indianapolis airport facility became Express Scripts
employees.
Express Scripts, which is the nation’s second-largest drug distribution firm behind Medco Health
Solutions, will invest $5.17 million to expand its Indianapolis operations.
Indiana Economic Development Corp.
offered Express Scripts up to $2.95 million in performance-based tax credits and up to $50,000 in training grants based on
the company’s job creation plans. Also, the city of Indianapolis will support additional property tax abatement at the request
of Indianapolis Economic Development Inc.
"We certainly welcome the jobs Express Scripts has decided to locate
in Indianapolis," said Indianapolis Mayor Greg Ballard in a prepared statement. "The decision to consolidate operations
here is indicative that the benefits our city provides continue to make Indianapolis a strategic choice.”
