Cash-constrained IndyGo on Tuesday announced proposed route cutbacks in response to its $3.2 million budget shortfall.

The city’s bus service receives about 30 percent of its $53 million annual budget from property-tax distributions,
which have been reduced in part by property-tax caps.

Many of the proposed route cuts are on the east side of Indianapolis, including the elimination of the Route 87 Eastside
Circulator.

In addition, IndyGo proposes to eliminate the Airport Express route on the west side in September, when its federal funding
contract expires.

It also proposes cutting the popular bus service to Carmel and Fishers known as IndyGo Commuter Express, or ICE, when federal
grants expire at the end of this year. That move was not unexpected, as federal money covers a large portion of expenses for
the service.

Route changes and frequency adjustments constitute the bulk of the proposed changes.

IndyGo also proposes a fare increase, including bumping the single-ride cost to $2 from $1.75.

Two public hearings on the proposed changes are set for this Thursday at 11:30 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. at the Indiana Convention
Center.
