As a subscriber you can listen to articles at work, in the car, or while you work out. Subscribe NowWestfield Mayor Andy Cook said Tuesday that city officials have decided on a location for a massive proposed sports and community recreation complex known as the "Family Sports Capital of America."
The Westfield sports commission chose an area bordered by State Road 32 on the south, 196th Street to the north, Spring Mill Road on the west and State Road 31 to the east.
The sports and recreation campus is expected to occupy 300 acres and cost millions of dollars to fully develop.
Over the past 12 months, three potential sites were examined by the sports commission, including one within the proposed Symphony development along Towne Road between 146th and 161st streets planned by The Estridge Cos. But Estridge pulled out of consideration earlier this month.
Another proposal came from local developer Chris R. White for a site north of downtown Westfield.
Westfield developers Steve Henke and Beau Wilfong organized and promoted the selected site and will participate in the development of the project, Cook said.
Cook said the site was chosen primarily because it "will provide the greatest opportunity for economic development in Westfield."
