Gleaners Food Bank is wrapping up an ambitious capital campaign, announcing that it has exceeded its goal despite the difficult economic environment.

The Indianapolis-based agency publicly launched the $11.6 million fundraising effort in April, just before it moved to the former Monarch Beverage Co. warehouse on Indianapolis’ southwest side. Planning and private fundraising began in 2008.

On Wednesday, Gleaners said it has raised $12.3 million.

The Campaign for Gleaners covered the expense of buying and equipping the Monarch facility—which has more than three times as much space as the building where Gleaners operated for 25 years—and relocating the not-for-profit agency.

Nearly 8,500 donations were made during the campaign, Gleaners said, including 16 pledges of $100,000 or more.

“We are humbly grateful for the support of so many … which will allow Gleaners to continue to serve hungry Hoosiers throughout central and southeastern Indiana for decades to come,” CEO Cindy Hubert said in a prepared statement.

Last year, the agency provided the equivalent of 19.5 million meals to help feed more than 160,000 people in central Indiana. It is the main food supplier to food pantries in 21 counties.

Although the campaign is closing, its fundraising efforts continue. Gleaners still has some “major equipment needs, endowment goals and other initiatives” that were not fully funded by the campaign, Hubert said.
