The Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra will play Zionsville for the first time this summer, thanks to an invitation from the owners of Wild Air Farms.

Horse farm owner Elizabeth Johnson extended the invitation, and local businesspeople and volunteers have been making a huge effort to sell tickets and promote the July 17 show, ISO spokeswoman Jessica DiSanto said.

The ISO typically makes summer “run-outs” to Danville, Lebanon, Bloomington, Wabash and Ellenberger Park on the east side of Indianapolis. All those locations are on the calendar this year.

Wild Air Farms, which is at 6770 Kissel Road, has been the scene of many a fundraiser and equestrian event.

“They know how to host a big event,” DiSanto said. The ISO hopes to sell 1,500 to 2,000 tickets.

The orchestra will set up around a lake, and attendees are welcome to bring food and drink, a la Symphony on the Prairie at Conner Prairie. The ISO will bring in vendors and rest rooms.

One difference is the lack of shelter for the orchestra. If there’s any sign of rain, the show will be canceled, and ticketholders will receive vouchers to Symphony on the Prairie, DiSanto said.

The concert will be an extension of the repertoire planned for the same weekend at Conner Prairie. Jerry Steichen will be guest conductor.
