Anita Woudenberg, [in her June 13 Forefront column “Indiana Supremes blew it with police case”] didn’t go far enough. We occasionally read of women being pulled over and molested, or worse, by persons illegally wearing police uniforms. So how is a homeowner to know if someone pounding on the door at 3:00 in the morning is actually a police officer and not a criminal in disguise? And what happens to the single woman in a less than desirable neighborhood who keeps a gun handy to defend herself in the event of someone trying to enter her home in the middle of the night? Perhaps the pseudo officer is there simply to case the house for valuables … will the homeowner be expected to stand by while he helps himself to whatever he wants? If the courts decide to eliminate the Fourth amendment, which amendment will be the next to go?
