The Indiana University School of Law in Indianapolis is poised on Thursday to make what it says is a "major" announcement, which some in the local legal community speculate involves a large donation and a renaming of the school.

An IU spokesman would not comment on details of the announcement.

IU renamed its law school in Bloomington in honor of Indianapolis attorney and businessman Michael Maurer, who gave $35 million to the school in December 2008. Maurer is co-owner of IBJ Media.

IU President Michael A. McRobbie is among university officials who are expected to attend the announcement scheduled for 1:30 p.m. at Lawrence W. Inlow Hall on the IUPUI campus east of downtown.

The law school has annual enrollment of roughly 1,000 and awards about 300 degrees in a given academic year.
