In the democracy that is the cornerstone of our country, we elect our senators and representatives to do just that—represent our interests. That often involves making difficult choices. That is exactly what 82 members of the Indiana General Assembly (54 representatives and 28 senators) did in voting to enact a right-to-work law.

No one has said right-to-work will be the immediate cure-all for what ails our economy (our struggles are largely due to national concerns). But it also won’t lower wages and threaten workers’ safety and health care, as opponents claimed.

It’s simply the right thing to do for Indiana. Combined with the many other improvements to our business climate in recent years, Indiana will be able to compete for more job creation and company investment opportunities. There are already early signs of both Indiana and out-of-state companies more willing to call our state home because of right-to-work.

Yes, the legislative battle is over. No, the issue will not go away entirely. For now, thank you to the legislators who made it possible to create more jobs for those in need and protect the freedom of choice for Hoosier workers.
