Taco Bell owner Charlie Brown is topping off his longtime support of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Indiana with a $1 million gift.

The gift is the largest by an individual in the not-for-profit’s history, Big Brothers Big Sisters said in an announcement Thursday.

Brown is co-owner of 75 restaurants in three states and executive vice president of Southern Bells Inc., one of the largest Taco Bell franchises in the nation. He's also a past board president of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Indiana.

Big Brothers Big Sisters honored Brown last summer for his lifetime of volunteering and giving to the organization. Brown shared his thoughts with IBJ in August for a Leading Questions video (see below).

The organization said it will use the gift to support its general mission of providing children with professionally supported, one-on-one mentoring relationships.

“I have complete confidence in the agency and have every bit of faith that they will strategically invest this gift so that it has an even greater impact in the lives of today’s youth,” Brown said in a prepared statement.

CEO Darcey Palmer-Shultz said Brown’s gift is inspiring: “It’s a true testament to Charlie’s commitment to youth and belief in the impact of Big Brothers Big Sisters mentoring.”

Brown will present a check during a special event March 19 at the east-side Legacy Center. Beforehand, he’ll join volunteers and children in a taco cooking class.
