The city of Indianapolis threw its biggest party ever in 2012, hosting Super Bowl XLVI in February—a performance on the international stage that won rave reviews. It was a fitting way to start the year.

Even though the economy in Indiana and nationally continues to sputter, there was a surprising wealth of good news in 2012.

The residential real estate market finally perked up, with apartment development booming and sales of existing homes and permits for new homes jumping.

Homegrown technology success story ExactTarget Inc., founded barely a decade ago, successfully staged an initial public offering in March that left it with a $1.4 billion market value.

But the year also was marked by controversy. The General Assembly passed a right-to-work bill over howls of protest from union members.

And WellPoint Inc. bounced Angela Braly as CEO after an investor insurrection spurred by repeated missteps.
