I agree with Sheila Kennedy [Aug. 26] that the GOP of a generation ago that she and I worked for and supported has left. However, I am a little less concerned about the “kooks and nuts” (my phrase) that she discussed, as given that there are probably that of tens of thousands of elected officials throughout the country, you are going to have outliers. I think the Anthony Weiners of both parties provide great subject matter for late night comedians and probably do minimal harm (outside of their families).

I am concerned that the GOP as a party is on the wrong side of too many issues to include:

1. Damaging our national credit and therefore our country by its continual brinksmanship over the debt ceiling;

2. Its inability to handle the immigration issue in a responsible way to include at least the Dream Act and finding a practical path to citizenship for those with long term ties to the U.S.;

3. Being more accepting of those with alternative lifestyles to include being supportive of gay marriages.

The party when Hudnut and Lugar were leaders responsibly handled the debt ceiling and helped find solutions to the then-immigration problem. I would like to think that they would also have come around to the concept of gay marriage at least as quickly as President Obama did.
