Indiana Lt. Gov. Sue Ellspermann is heading overseas to promote the state's agriculture industry.

Ellspermann says she will lead a delegation of industry leaders and commodity representatives during the trip to Asia. The delegation plans to visit Japan, South Korea and Taiwan for two weeks beginning Saturday.

The lieutenant governor says she'll seek to build new business relationships and let Indiana leaders explore opportunities overseas.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture reports Indiana exports close to $4.7 billion in farm goods each year and is one of the top exporters of corn, pork and soy meal.

“Our state’s agriculture industry and agri-businesses employ 475,000 Hoosiers with 34,800 jobs directly related to agricultural exports," Ellspermann said in a prepared statement. "Although Indiana already ranks 8th in nation in agriculture exports, we believe that there are opportunities for greater exports and foreign investment."

Ted McKinney, director of the Indiana State Department of Agriculture, also will make the trip, which is being funded by private donations.

Information will be posted during the trip on the lieutenant governor's website.
