Rolls-Royce Corp. and the Military/Veterans Coalition of Indiana are teaming up to put a memorial statue of Col. Harvey “Weir” Cook on prominent display at his namesake airport terminal.

An Indiana native, Cook was a decorated fighter pilot in World War I who settled in Indianapolis and was instrumental in creating the city’s first principal airport, Indianapolis Municipal Airport, opened in 1931. He was its first manager.

Cook returned to the Army Air Corps in 1941, and he died March 24, 1943, in a plane crash while training pilots.

The memorial project team chose Indiana artist Bill Wolfe and has a budget of $80,000—all private funds, said Robert Nester, retired U.S. Air Force Major General and chairman of the memorial project.

The team unveiled its plans July 2 for an audience that included Cook’s relatives. The statue will be placed at the center entrance of the Weir Cook Memorial Terminal.
