Even with the decrease, Indiana’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate fell to 5.7 percent, down from 5.8 percent in August.
The state’s manufacturing sector added 5,900 jobs last month, the DWD said in its monthly report. The gain was more than offset, though, by a loss of 3,800 jobs in the leisure and hospitality sector, 2,000 jobs in the trade, transportation and utilities sector, 1,300 jobs in the professional and business services sector, and 900 jobs in construction.
The DWD said Indiana has led the nation in manufacturing growth over the past year with an increase of 25,600 jobs.
The rate of unemployment in Indiana has decreased in 16 of the last 22 months. The state’s decrease of 1.6 percentage points over the past year is one of the largest declines in the nation, the DWD said.
Ohio led the Midwest with the lowest unemployment rate in September, at 5.6 percent, followed by Indiana, Illinois (6.6 percent), Kentucky (6.7 percent) and Michigan (7.2 percent).
The national unemployment rate for August stood at 5.9 percent.
