One Indiana Republican is ready to give up his seat just hours after winning re-election.

House Speaker Pro Tem Eric Turner defeated Democrat Bob Ashley on Tuesday, but plans to resign to take a job with Equip Leadership Inc., a Georgia-based not-for-profit organization specializing in mentoring and preparing Christian church leaders.

Turner became the focus of a House ethics investigation earlier this year after he privately lobbied lawmakers to kill legislation that could have cost his family's nursing home business millions in revenue.

He was cleared of wrongdoing, but Republican House Speaker Brian Bosma announced in August that he would strip Turner of his leadership title after the election. Bosma also pledged to initiate tougher ethics rules for lawmakers during the 2015 session.

Republicans will get to appoint Turner's successor once he resigns.

Turner made the decision to resign in September, too late to be removed from the ballot. Candidates had to withdraw by July 15 to remove their names, according to the Secretary of State’s election calendar.
