An Indianapolis-based company has donated six paintings by famed Indiana-born impressionist T.C. Steele to Indiana University.

OneAmerica, a mutual insurance holding company and financial services provider, donated the six oil landscapes to IU along with another landscape by fellow impressionist John Ottis Adams. The paintings capture the seasonal splendor of Brown County and other mostly rural areas of Indiana. They have been appraised at $500,000.

IU President Michael McRobbie says IU is proud to offer a new home for the paintings by "two of our state's most acclaimed artists."

Steele and Adams were born in Indiana, spent much of their working careers in the state and had ties to IU. Both men were members of the Hoosier Group of impressionist painters during the late 19th century and early 20th century.

Steele, who died in 1926 age the age of 78, spent years in Indianapolis as a portrait painter and art school owner between sojourns to Indiana communities such as Brookville, Metamora, Spencer and Vernon. He eventually settled in Brown County.

IU said its was still determining where it would display the art.
