The Indiana state Senate has approved a bill that would provide about $430 million in one-time funding to local governments for road improvements.

The measure by Sen. Brandt Hershman, R-Lafayette, was approved on a 49-1 vote Tuesday. It now goes to the House for consideration.

The bill would provide the money from reserve funds that are set aside when the state distributes shares of income taxes to local governments. Under the measure, 75 percent of that disbursement would be required to go to roads and infrastructure improvements.

The measure is supported by Gov. Mike Pence. But Sen. Mark Stoops, D-Bloomington, said he was opposed because local governments should have the authority to spend the money however they want. He was the lone "no" vote.
