Goodwill Industries Foundation of Central Indiana has received a $2.5 million donation from the Martha G. Davis Family Trust, the local not-for-profit announced Wednesday.

Davis, a longtime resident of Columbus and supporter of Goodwill, was 101 when she died in 2013.

A homemaker who was active in Columbus civic and not-for-profit circles, Davis was the widow of Wayne Davis, a Columbus city council member and school board president who worked for First National Bank for 56 years. He died in 1982.

“We are sincerely grateful for the generosity and foresight of Mrs. Davis,” Goodwill CEO Kent Kramer said in a written statement. “Throughout her life, Martha committed her time and talent to many missions that served others. We are honored to share in her and her husband, Wayne’s, legacy and will strive to be good stewards of their gift.”

Goodwill said it will use the donation for its overall mission to help people in central Indiana become economically self-sufficient and improve their lives by gaining access to education, employment  and  health care.

The organization is active in 29 central Indiana counties and employs more than 3,000 state residents.
