Longtime recycling and environmental advocate Carey Hamilton has been chosen as the Democratic candidate to replace Christina Hale as a state representative in the Indiana Statehouse.

With a unanimous vote by precinct leaders in the House District 87 caucus, Hamilton was confirmed as the official candidate, the Indiana Democratic Party announced Wednesday.

Hale is taking her name off November’s ballot as a state rep to run for lieutenant governor alongside Democratic gubernatorial candidate John Gregg as he seeks to unseat Republican Gov. Mike Pence in November.

Hamilton, 44, told IBJ on May 27 that she was "very interested,” in leading the district, which covers the northern portion of Indianapolis, including parts that run south to the Broad Ripple area and east near Fort Harrison State Park.

"I am excited to be on the ballot in November for the open House District 87 seat,” Hamilton said in a written statement. “In the months ahead, I look forward to learning what is most important to the voters of House District 87 and also sharing my thoughts on strengthening our schools, economy, infrastructure and environment.  I am also honored to have the strong endorsement of Christina Hale who has served this District so well for the past 4 years."
