I’m writing in support of Marty Murphy’s op-ed “Close the direct auto sales loophole to protect Hoosiers” [Nov. 21].

As a small Hoosier business owner, I see the laws that long ago established the network of franchise auto dealers still protecting the people of Indiana every single day.

I see it when employees at one of my four dealerships stand up for a customer in need of a repair when the car owner is just outside the manufacturer warranty. I see it when we provide financing for a growing family in need of a bigger, more reliable vehicle and I see it when we can quickly and systematically fix recalled parts.

U.S. and foreign manufacturers trying to work outside of the dealer network say they can do all of that, even when their vehicles are sold to the masses. But how? Without a reliable network spread out across the state and around the country, they can’t.

Just about every auto manufacturer is working on innovative, all-electric cars for families. We cannot allow some of those manufacturers to use innovation as an excuse to bypass laws and put consumers at risk.
