North-side barbecue restaurant GT South’s Rib House has closed its doors after 25 years in business, the owners announced this week.

The restaurant and bar at 5711 E. 71st St. (just west of Binford Boulevard) was founded by Georgia native Gerald Travis South in June 1992 and remained in the South family after his death in 2005.

“It's with a very heavy heart we are sad to announce that after 25 years, GT South’s Rib House will be closing its doors at 8 p.m. tonight,” the family posted Wednesday on Facebook. “We appreciate your loyalty and business for the past 25 years. We would like to thank everyone who made us a part of their weddings, graduations, birthdays and many other special events.”

The restaurant started in a 1,200-square-foot space and was later expanded to 5,000 square feet and seating for 190. The business employed more than 35 people.

“We would also like to thank our employees, who have been with us for many years,” the Facebook post said. “Without them, we wouldn't have been able to have done any of it.”

The business expanded in 2003 by opening a second restaurant, at 4919 S. Emerson Ave., in Beech Grove. It closed in 2011.
