Visit Indy CEO Leonard Hoops told members of the city’s Capital Improvement Board, which owns the Indiana Convention Center, that his organization notched a big win after a long pursuit.

Visit Indy signed a deal to host the American Wind Energy Association Windpower Conference & Exhibition June 7-10, 2021, in the convention center. “This is a big win for us,” Hoops said. “This is one we booked after a three-year pursuit.”

The AWEA is expected to draw more than 8,000 people from around the world. But Hoops said the convention is just as important because attendees will include many of the “thought leaders” in the up-and-coming green sector—an area city officials would like more exposure to.

This year, the AWEA held its conference in Los Angeles. Next year, it will be in Chicago, then Houston in 2019 and Denver in 2020 before coming to Indianapolis.

Attendance could be higher than early projections, given the show’s growth. AWEA officials said the conference saw double-digit growth in 2016 and 2017.

AWEA is a Washington, D.C.-based trade association formed in 1974, representing wind-power project developers, equipment suppliers, service providers, parts manufacturers, utilities, researchers, and others involved in the wind industry.•
