Vice President Mike Pence said Indiana economist William Styring III, who died Monday, will long be remembered “for his life of humble service and commitment to economic freedom.”

Pence on Wednesday issued an official statement recognizing Styring’s passing.

Styring, 72, was an economist, author and pundit who was influential in crafting and analyzing Indiana policy for decades (see IBJ story here).

“It is with a heavy heart that I offer my condolences on the passing of a dear friend and former colleague, Bill Styring,” Pence said. “Bill leaves behind a legacy that will not soon be forgotten. His public service and contributions to conservative economic thought will live on.”

Pence was president of the Indiana Policy Review Foundation from 1991 to 1994 during the same period in which Styring was chairman for public policy for the organization.

“I personally had the privilege of serving alongside Bill at the Indiana Policy Review Foundation, and worked with him at various times throughout my career in Indiana,” Pence said. “Bill will be missed but remembered for his life of humble service and commitment to economic freedom. Karen and I send our prayers to Bill’s wife of 44 years, Ellen, and their family in their time of loss. “

Services for Styring are scheduled for 1 a.m. Friday at Flanner Buchanan funeral home in Carmel. Visitation is scheduled for 11 a.m.
