Salesforce Inc. announced details Thursday morning for a pilot training program it will launch in Indianapolis to help fulfill its plans to train 500 Hoosiers by 2020.

The Salesforce Pathfinder Training Program will be a four-month long course focused on training individuals in soft skills, business acumen and effective communication for jobs in software development and data management, the company said.

Salesforce is partnering with Deloitte to launch the program, which will be open to Indiana youth, veterans and professionals looking to re-enter the workforce.

The first class is expected to start in May with 50 participants. The second class will also include 50 individuals and should start in September. The training will continue through 2019 and 2020.

Salesforce said it plans to work with Ivy Tech Community College to recruit participants.

Salesforce announced plans to train 500 Indiana apprentices in May at the grand opening of Salesforce Tower in downtown Indianapolis.

The program will involve a combination of classroom training that will take place in Indianapolis and online learning through Salesforce’s existing Trailhead platform. Participants will also receive mentorship from Trailhead participants, or Trailblazers. Salesforce has hired more than half of Trailhead's users.

Graduates of the Pathfinder program are not guaranteed jobs at Salesforce or Deloitte, but the training is designed to prepare recruits for a high-demand field. U.S. companies are expected to hire 300,000 employees in the jobs graduates will be trained to do.

Deloitte also committed to interviewing graduates from the program and offering internships or other employment to 10 percent of qualified participants.

After piloting the program in Indianapolis, which is the company's second largest hub outside of its headquarters in San Francisco, Salesforce plans to expand it to other cities. Salesforce has nearly 1,700 employees in Indiana and nearly 30,000 worldwide.

“There is a lot of untapped talent and potential all over the U.S., and Indianapolis is a great place to kick-start the Pathfinder Training Program with its booming tech scene,” Bob Stutz, CEO of Marketing Cloud and chief analytics officer for Salesforce, said in a written statement. “We are committed to growing in Indiana and becoming a national leader in the creation of tech jobs.”
