Honda’s plant in Greensburg is adding a third model to its production lineup—an all-new version of the Insight hybrid sedan.

The automaker announced this week that it will debut a prototype version of the 2019 Honda Insight at the North American Auto Show on Jan. 15. The auto show, which takes place in Detroit, runs Jan. 13-28.

Honda will make the Insight at its Greensburg plant, which also produces the Civic sedan and CR-V sports utility vehicle. The Insight is set to hit the market in the summer of 2018.

The 2019 Insight will be the re-introduction of a model that debuted in 1999. Honda introduced a second-generation Insight in 2009, and ended production of the model in 2014.

Honda describes the 2019 Insight as an all-new two-motor hybrid and “an upscale, stylish five-passenger sedan positioned above the Civic in Honda’s passenger car lineup.”

The Greensburg plant, one of Honda’s 19 major North American manufacturing facilities, occupies 1.3 million square feet and has more than 2,400 employees.

The impact that the Insight will have on the facility’s operations was not immediately clear. Asked for details, Bob Nelson, president of Honda Manufacturing of Indiana LLC, responded: “Our Indiana team is proud to produce the Honda Insight. We look forward to sharing the Insight with our customers in the U.S., North America and around the world."

In 2016, Honda Manufacturing of Indiana LLC announced it would add 100 new jobs and spend $52 million on a new production line to prepare its Greensburg facility for CR-V production. The plant began producing those vehicles in February.

In January, Honda announced its intent to make two-thirds of its global sales from electrified vehicles by 2030. The Insight will be the fifth electrified vehicle Honda has brought to market over the past year.
