The Legislature passed a $1.2 billion transportation and infrastructure plan in April that included a 10-cent-per-gallon increase in the gas tax.

Indiana drivers are also now paying a higher fee at the Bureau of Motor Vehicles on their vehicle registrations, including drivers of hybrid and electric vehicles.

The gas tax increase has not set well with some Republican voters, as outside interest groups are already making it an issue in upcoming GOP primaries. For instance, Luke Messer and Todd Rokita are expected to use it as a weapon against U.S. Senate hopeful Mike Braun, whom they are facing in the GOP primary and who voted for the tax hike as a member of the Legislature.•
