Sheridan-based livestock nutrition company JBS United Inc. said Tuesday that it was rebranding itself as United Animal Health Inc.
The company—founded as United Feeds by John B. Swisher in 1956 with two employees and $25,000 he borrowed from family members—is one of the largest hog-feed producers in the nation, with annual revenue approaching $400 million and more than 350 employees.
In the early part of the century, United Feeds changed its names to JBS United to better reflect a more diversified business strategy beyond just livestock feeds. Today, it offers nutritional products for swine, dairy and beef cattle and poultry.
According to IBJ’s latest list of largest Indianapolis-private companies, JBS United ranks 14th, with 2016 revenue of $391.1 million.
The new name will help the local company avoid any confusion with other companies using the JBS name, including JBS USA, which is a leading processor of beef, pork and lamb.
“We had the opportunity to modernize our logo and our look to better reflect where we are going as a company and where the industry is headed in the future, while pointing out permanently that we are not related to any other JBS company,” United Animal Health President and CEO Doug Webel said in written comments. “We’ve added Animal Health to our corporate name as we believe that nutrition is health and feel the research we do and the solutions we offer the industry all revolves around the health of the animal.”
