Methodist Sports Medicine, a private chain of orthopedic and sports clinics in central Indiana, is expanding into southern Indiana with the acquisition of Bloomington Bone & Joint Clinic.

The deal, announced Wednesday, will become effective in April. The Bloomington clinic will be renamed Methodist Sports Medicine Bloomington. Terms were not disclosed.

Bloomington Bone & Joint, 639 S. Walker St., was founded in 1992 and has about 20 employees, including three physician partners. All the physicians will remain under the new ownership.

Indianapolis-based Methodist, founded in 1983, is owned by a private group of physicians and has more than 50 employees. It has locations in Carmel, Greenwood, Tipton, Westfield and Avon.

The two organizations said they have been working together on sports medicine treatments for Indiana University athletes since the early 1980s, making the merger a natural fit.

"This merger gives Methodist Sports Medicine the opportunity to bring the two businesses together to offer our patients a broader service area, plus bring additional resources to Bloomington," Dr. Mark Ritter, president of Methodist Sports Medicine, said in written remarks.
