Muncie's former building commissioner has agreed to plead guilty to federal corruption charges.

In an agreement filed Thursday in U.S. District Court in Indianapolis, Craig Nichols pleaded guilty to one count each of wire fraud and money laundering. Nichols faces a maximum of 20 years in prison and a fine of up to $250,000 on each count, The Star Press reported.

He was indicted on more than 30 counts last year alleging he used sham bidding practices and submitted fake invoices to steer work to companies he owned and then billed the city more than $376,000 for demolition work that was either never performed or performed at inflated prices.

Nichols was Muncie's building commissioner since 2012 before resigning Wednesday. He had been on leave since his indictment.

His attorney declined comment.
