The closing, which will coincide with the expiration of Kroger’s lease, will affect 65 employees, all of whom the company said will be given the opportunity to transfer to another Indianapolis-area store.
Kroger, which said it operates five stores within six miles of the store that’s slated to close, is the biggest grocery player in the Indianapolis-area market, according to 2017 data from Chain Store Guide. Kroger has more than 50 stores here and a market share approaching 40 percent, well ahead of Walmart's 24 percent share and Meijer's 12 percent share.
The company said it had been monitoring the performance of the 46th Street store but concluded its return to profitability is no longer realistic.
