A downtown restaurant that had to halt operations when it suffered a flood late last month has made the closure permanent.
Noodles & Co., at 121 W. Maryland St., closed July 30 when a vehicle fire in the World of Wonders parking garage for Circle Centre mall led to a flood.
"Due to the extent of damage at this location, we made the decision to permanently close this restaurant," a Noodles & Co. spokeswoman said Wednesday in an email to IBJ. "We invite guests to dine with us at our nearby IUPUI restaurant located at 903 Indiana Avenue."
Indianapolis Fire Department officials said the flooding occurred when firefighters activated a leaky standpipe while battling the blaze in the garage at Maryland and Illinois streets. A standpipe is a rigid water pipe built into multistory buildings that firefighters use for connecting hoses.
Water caused damage in two street-level restaurants in the garage—at Dick’s Last Resort at 111 W. Maryland and at the Noodles & Co. next door. Dick’s never closed but Noodles & Co. suffered far worse damage, with several inches of standing water on its floors.
The downtown location opened in early 2009, replacing Hard Times Cafe.
Noodles & Co. has at least 11 other restaurants in the Indianapolis area, but its only other downtown location is at IUPUI. The 23-year-old Colorado-based chain has about 400 locations nationwide.
