House Speaker Brian Bosma said in a statement Thursday that House Ways and Means Chairman Tim Brown is in critical but stable condition and that "the next few days are going to be very important" for the Crawfordsville lawmaker.
Bosma had declined earlier comment on Brown's condition out of respect for the injured lawmaker's family.
Brown, 62, was taken to a Petoskey, Michigan, hospital on Wednesday after he was thrown from his motorcycle when an SUV pulled in front of him near northern Michigan's Mackinac Bridge.
Brown was on a trip with fellow Republican Rep. Mike Speedy of Indianapolis, who wasn't injured. According to media reports, Brown was wearing a helmet at the time of the accident.
Speedy told IBJ on Wednesday that Brown was in a medically induced coma and would be moved to a hospital in Ann Arbor, Michigan.
Brown, a retired emergency room physician, has served in the Legislature since 1994.
"Tim’s wife, Jane, and his daughters are with him, and he is receiving extraordinary care," Bosma said in his statement. "The family is overwhelmed by the outpouring of support and prayers for Tim’s quick recovery. Please continue to pray for him, his family, Representative Speedy and all those involved. I also ask that we all continue to respect the family’s privacy during this challenging time.”
