The former Urban Eats Grill & Cantina Mexican restaurant at 250 S. Meridian St. downtown is now home to a new Mexican eatery, #Tequila Street Tacos and Cantina.
Yes, a hashtag—a symbol used to tag words on social media sites—is an official part of #Tequila’s name.
That’s an acknowledgement of social media’s importance to restaurants and their customers, said Martin Mecatl, who owns #Tequila along with his family.
#Tequila opened last month, but its "official" grand opening is set for March 22-23.
The family also owns Mr. Tequila’s Cantina & Grill, which opened three years ago at 931 S. East St. in Fletcher Place, across from Eli Lilly and Co.’s corporate campus.
But whereas Mr. Tequila’s is more of a family dining spot with a full menu, #Tequila will have more of an adult vibe. Female servers, which the restaurant calls senoritas, will wear skimpy outfits with a Mexican theme, like a Mexican version of Hooters, Mecatl said.
“We call it the wild side of Mr. Tequila’s,” Mecatl said with a laugh.
#Tequila, which has seating for 135 patrons, offers full table service at lunch and dinner. The kitchen will stay open late, Mecatl said, though the establishment will take on more of a bar atmosphere after 11 p.m.
#Tequila’s menu offers 20 different tacos. The more exotic choices include cricket and a minnow-sized fish called charal, both of which are popular in Mexico. There’s also a vegetarian taco made from huitlacoche, or corn smut, a fungus used as a meat substitute.
