Subscribe NowChristina Hale’s Forefront column [Hoosiers deserve tax breaks for diapers, tampons, pads, April 12] appealing for tax relief for tampons and diapers, items that are “simply necessary to personal hygiene and the vivid realities of our biology,” is an interesting, albeit naive, perspective.
Why favor gender when today’s world demands “equality”? All genders and ages need items that are “simply necessary to personal hygiene.” Soap, deodorant, shampoo, water I would argue are necessary to personal hygiene.
I don’t understand the rationale behind sales tax relief for people who buy and sell gold bullion and other metal coins. Those exemptions may or may not be reasonable decisions that benefit the state’s citizens. I’m skeptical about that, but to extend tax remedies to products “necessary to personal hygiene” is frivolous, if not facetious.
Perhaps Ms. Hale’s article was an attempt at a humorous counter-argument to tax relief for buying and selling bullion and metal coins. If so, I mistook her intent and the joke is on me.
