The Indianapolis Metropolitan Development Commission had originally set a January meeting to consider a request to rezone 70 acres for three distinct residential subdivisions and a retail strip center at the southeast corner of
Crown Hill wants to sell the property to Indianapolis-based Mann for $5.65 million to shore up its endowment, which would cover maintenance at the cemetery once all burial plots are sold. Staff of the Indianapolis Department of Metropolitan Development recommended approving Mann’s request.
But at least 100 residents and community groups have sent letters in opposition to the plans, which would affect land that includes a mature forest and wetlands.
The first extension was offered to allow the Indianapolis Museum of Art and Christian Theological Seminary time to decide if they wanted to weigh in on the petition. Neither elected to do so.
